Baptist News Global: ‘Time for a theological confrontation’ with Christian nationalism, Taylor says

In his encyclical “Magnifica Humanitas,” Pope Leo XIV calls on Catholics to be mindful of their words, but this mindfulness includes denouncing injustice. At the very least, Defying Tyrants raises fruitful questions regarding how Christians should speak about injustice in their midst with love and courage.

What then, do we make of Constantine’s conversion to Christianity? As was noted by other Christians at the time, Constantine did not end the Roman Empire. At best, he just ended the persecution of Christians. This obvious contradiction is how Taylor explains the existence of Christian nationalism, not as a particularly new idea, but a theological quandary that’s been around since Constantine.
